Rabbi Yisrael Soloveichik zt"l
Rabbi Yisrael Soloveichik zt"l
June 25, 2015
This past Erev Shabbos, our beloved Baal Koreh of over 20 years, and longtime mispalel in our Bais Medrash for over 35 years, passed away. Rabbi Yisrael Soloveichik, zt"l, was renowned throughout the world as a Gadol baTorah. During his lifetime, he held senior positions in Yeshivas Nezer HaTorah and Kollel Vaad Tov in Yerushalayim, Yeshivas Toras Chaim, Russia, and Yeshivas Lucerne, Switzerland.

In his modest role as Baal Koreh on a Monday morning, a question once arose after reading. In preparation for Rosh Chodesh the next day, the gabbai began to roll the sefer Torah to Parshas Pinchas before hagbah (raising the Torah). Rav Soloveichik was of the opinion that the reading of the day was required to be displayed during hagbah. After a brief discussion, Maran Rosh HaYeshiva, zt"l, paskened that the original place of reading did not require display and hence the Torah could be rolled before hagbah. In his usual display of humility, he accepted the psak of Maran Rosh HaYeshiva, zt"l.

May HaRav Yisrael ben Harav Yaakov Moshe Mordechai zt"l be a melitz yosher for his almanah, children, and entire family, along with his talmidim, our yeshiva and all of Klal Yisrael.
